As mentioned previously, it is important to generate short-term wins and celebrate them as milestones of progress are achieved. However, we must not delude ourselves regarding the high difficulty level and complexities associated with organizational transformation.
Organizational effectiveness in a change situation requires that the organization’s people demonstrate a high level of commitment towards the new initiatives. Whereas structural changes and modifications can be conceptualized and designed without the commitment of the people, implementation will be impossible without them.
No two national economies are exactly the same. Rather than reinvent the wheel however, obvious similarities exist in one economy that can be leveraged upon to prescribe appropriate policy measures in another.
If properly articulated and implemented, some of the economic revival measures applied in Brazil can facilitate the reversal of the Nigerian recession and reposition the economy on the path of sustainable recovery and growth.
Nigeria is not Venezuela
With the preponderance of chronic power outages, spiraling inflation, depreciation of the local currency, crumbling infrastructure and severe uptick in the prices of basic goods, Nigeria currently finds itself in somewhat similar circumstances like the oil-rich South American country.
The fact of the existence of the recession is incontrovertible. The need to articulate survival strategies to mitigate its adverse consequences is indispensable. I have outlined the following additional steps to help you navigate this challenging situation.
Acknowledgement of Recession
In a fair organized by the Central Bank of Nigeria for small and medium scale enterprises Isaac Okoroafor, Acting Director Corporate Communications made the following remarks regarding the current recession.
“Though we are in trouble, it is just for a while. As fast as we can, let us re-adjust ourselves so we can get out of the present situation. First of all, what is recession? Recession simply put, is a period of dwindling economic realities. Incomes are falling and government’s revenue is dwindling. Unemployment is increasing because businesses are not the way they should be. They sack workers because income is shrinking.

Reality Check
Avoid the denial syndrome by embracing the reality of the recession. It can’t be wished away. The earlier you realized and appreciated the negative impact of the development, the better equipped you are to embark on appropriate mitigating measures.
